How To Choose The Most Secure Home Safe

Want to add an extra layer of security to your home? What better way to do so than to invest in a secure home safe?

With so many sizes, styles, brands, and security ratings to choose from – we appreciate that knowing which to select can be easier said than done. However, the best home safe will protect your cherished possessions from theft, loss, and fire damage.

Here, eSafes offer tips to help you pick the best security safe for your home, including what factors you need to consider.

What items will you store inside the safe?

Take a minute to think carefully about what you’ll keep inside your safe.

People buy a home safe for all sorts of reasons – some want to secure precious heirlooms whilst others need somewhere to house cash, electronics, jewellery, or something else.

If you’re planning to squeeze in bulky items, such as laptops or cameras, you’ll want to opt for a more spacious home safe. If you’ve only got a few small belongings to house inside the safe, a smaller one should be fine.

What are your valuables worth?

Once you’ve decided what you’ll store inside your safe, the next step is to work out how much they are worth as every safe has a unique cash rating.

Cash ratings are used by insurers to determine what they’ll insure while it’s locked away in your safe, should anything happen to it.

They include:

  • Eurograde 0 – cash rating of £6,000 or £60,000 worth of valuables
  • Eurograde 1 – cash rating of £10,000 or £100,000 worth of valuables
  • Eurograde 2 – cash rating of £17,500 or £175,000 worth of valuables
  • Eurograde 3 – cash rating of £35,000 or £350,000 worth of valuables
  • Eurograde 4 – cash rating of £60,000 or £600,000 worth of valuables
  • Eurograde 5 – cash rating of £100,000 or £1,000,000 worth of valuables
  • Eurograde 6 – cash rating of £150,000 or £1,500,000 worth of valuables
  • Eurograde 7 – cash rating of £250,000 or £2,500,000 worth of valuables

So, when buying a security safe for your home, make sure you choose a suitable Eurograde cash rating that matches the valuables you’ll store in it.

What’s your budget?

Here at eSafes, we provide home safes in all shapes and sizes from reputable brands, such as Burg Wachter, Burton Safes, Dudley Safes, Securikey and Yale, to name just a few.

If you can afford to increase your budget for a safe, you’ll probably get more space, more security features, and a higher Eurograde cash rating.

However, if you’re on a budget and simply want to protect a couple of small items, you should still be able to find a compact, high-quality home safe for a fraction of the price.

What type of lock do you need?

An important factor to consider when buying a security safe for your home is how many people will need access to it.

Safes typically work with a key, electronic, or biometric lock.

With a key, you can relax knowing that only keyholders can operate the safe. But if you’re guilty of losing keys, you might consider a safe that has a combination lock instead. This will allow you to unlock the safe using the correct numerical code.

If multiple people require access to your safe, a biometric (fingerprint) lock is ideal. It reduces the need for keys and codes and allows users to open the safe by placing their fingers on the scanner.
