How To Open Your Safe When You've Lost Your Combination

Forgotten the code to your safe?

There are few things more frustrating than having your valuables securely locked away, only to discover you can’t get the door open. However, it’s happened to us all – some more than others.

If you find yourself in this situation, the best thing to do is remain calm. We get that it’s easier said than done, but trust us, the more stressed you are, the longer it will take to regain access to your safe and its contents.

Here the security specialists at eSafes advise you on what to do when you forget or lose the combination to your safe.

3 steps to open your safe without the combination

Step 1: Figure out which safe you have

Firstly, you need to establish what type of safe have, starting with the brand and model. Knowing this will allow you to inform your local locksmith, so they can research it and work out the best way to gain access without irreparable damage.

For the most part, the brand is easy enough to find on the door of the safe and the serial number can be seen on the bottom corner of the door.

Determining the model can be trickier, as not all manufacturers place the model number on the back of the safe. Plus, if yours is bolted down to the floor or wall, you won’t be able to see it.

If you can’t find the model number, you could check your receipt (if you’ve still got it). Otherwise, call the manufacturer and ask them if they can tell you what model you have going off your serial number.

Step 2: Find out if your safe has a key override

Once you’ve figured out what type of safe you have, the next step is to check whether or not it has an override key.

Combination safes that have a master code or override function can be unlocked using the correct number sequence or a key. This comes in very useful for emergencies and essentially gives you an alternative method for gaining access to your belongings.

Not all manufacturers make it known that their safes have an override key, preventing opportunists from helping themselves to your possessions using the key.

To determine whether your safe has an override key, take the time to read through your manual. If yours does, you should have no problem getting back into the safe!

Step 3: Contact your local locksmith

If you’re still unable to get into your safe, it’s worth seeking professional assistance from a locksmith.

Whilst you will have to spend a little more than if you were to do it yourself, they know all the best techniques to help you gain entry to your safe when you’ve lost the combination.

Manipulating the safe ensures minimal damage to the components (if any at all). Forced entry methods such as drilling, on the other hand, will allow you to gain access but will render the safe vulnerable.

Want to upgrade your combination safe?

If your combination safe has started to show signs of wear and tear, you may consider investing in a new one before the components become damaged beyond repair.

If you have an older safe, perhaps you’ve been toying with the idea of upgrading to a modern alternative, one that boasts several security features.

Whatever it may be, the team at eSafes is always on hand to help and will be more than happy to guide and advise you.
