Insurance Ratings for Safes – Where To Start

If you are looking to store cash and valuables in a home safe you need to make sure you purchase a safe with the appropriate insurance rating.

Most insurance companies would obviously prefer you keep large amounts of cash in the bank but they will cover you as long as you pick a safe with the right rating.

Where to start?

When choosing a safe we’d advise you work out the value of the cash or valuables you are looking to store. Once you have a figure in mind you can consult the table below which will tell you what level of cover you need:

Insurance Ratings table

So for example if you want to store around £80,000 in valuables then you’d need a Grade 1 safe as these have been approved by insurance companies to cover this amount of valuables.

If you think you might add to your jewellery collection for example you might want to consider selecting a safe with a higher insurance grade so your safe is future proof.

Another thing worth noting is that many insurance companies will advise you to get a £5,000 cash rated safe but as there is a small amount of safes available on the market in this bracket we always advise choosing a £6,000 (Grade 1) rated safe. This is because you will get more choice of brands and sizes and they can even be cheaper!

Which Safe?

Here at eSafes we appreciate that a lot of the safes can merge together and it can be hard to tell them apart, so to get you started in the table below you’ll see what safes our experts recommend.
