Protecting your business from burglary

Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, announced a third national lockdown on 4 January 2021. During this period, people are to remain at home and may only leave to shop for necessities, go to work if WFH isn't an option and daily exercise. But what does lockdown 3.0 mean for businesses?
Supermarkets, pharmacies, banks, building societies and post offices are classed as essential businesses, so can remain open to the public. And whilst retailers have physically shut up shop, they can still operate online - on a click and collect or delivery basis. But hospitality venues, such as pubs, bars and restaurants, have closed and the sale of takeaway alcohol is banned. Things are also tough for hotels - not to mention gyms and leisure facilities, entertainment venues and community centres - as they have had to close their doors (yet again!).
There's no disputing that these are unprecedented times for us all, and the last thing business owners want is to worry about threats, such as commercial burglaries. Which is why we thought we'd share some of our top tips to protect your premises from burglary…

Burglary prevention tips

Secure cash and valuables - if your business provides high-value items and handles a lot of cash, it's a good idea to lock them away in a secure place - away from plain sight. Never leave cash in the till overnight (especially if your business is shut for lockdown), and always remember to remove product displays at the end of the day.

Enhance security - burglars are savvy. They will monitor your property and assess the easiest way to gain access. Don't make their job easier. Always make sure that doors are locked and windows aren't left open. And if you're closed, why not use your time wisely to ramp up security and secure your premises with new door locks, a high-quality burglar alarm or perhaps CCTV and floodlights?

Increase visibility - criminals don't like to be seen and hide under the cover of darkness. A great way to protect your property against theft is to keep it well-lit at all times. Motion-sensor lighting is ideal as it alerts you every time someone is in the vicinity.

CCTV surveillance - smile for the camera! CCTV systems don't just monitor your property, they record footage which can be used as evidence should you be the victim of theft or even vandalism. Most of the time, burglars will avoid buildings that have 24-hour CCTV in operation as they are at serious risk of being caught red-handed.

Invest in a security safe - whether it be cash, electronics, jewellery or business documents, you don't want to leave things lying around overnight - never mind days or weeks! The best way to keep things secure and organised is to buy a safe and lock items away when they are not required.
