How Much Do Safes Weigh?

So, you’re thinking about buying a safe for your home.

There are several considerations to make when purchasing a home safe, such as: which brand is best, how big the safe needs to be and where it will be hidden in the house.

Something else that many people often wonder about when choosing a safe for their valuables is how heavy it needs to be. If it’s too heavy, surely, it’ll be too difficult to install. And if it’s too light, then it’ll be easy for thieves to steal, won’t it?

Let the security specialists at eSafes explain everything you need to know about safesto be able to make an informed decision.

How heavy should a safe be?

The weight of a security safe can vary depending on factors such as its size and the thickness and materials of the door and walls.

Generally, the bigger the safe, the more it will weigh. This is because it requires more steel and shelving inside.

Smaller home safes – like the Phoenix Home/Office SS0721K– weigh as little as 4kg and are usually sold with a DIY fixing kit.

Most models have pre-drilled holes, which allow you to secure them to the floor or wall with bolts. These bolts cannot be accessed from the outside of the unit. That means, despite being relatively light, opportunists won’t be able to remove your safe.

A medium-sized safe or fire-resistant model typically starts from 50kg. These have thicker walls and provide more insulation than non-fireproof safes. The more layers the safe has, the more protection it will offer – which explains why it will be heavier.

Take the Phoenix Titan II FS1283E, for instance. This fire safe weighs 53kg and offers up to 120 minutes of fire resistance. It’s also supplied with a shelf and drawer which adds to the overall weight.

Industrial safes, on the other hand, range from 100kg upwards. The reason why these weigh so much is that they need to be able to withstand more impact and are made from reinforced steel.

Which home safe will you choose?

As a general rule of thumb, a decent home safe will be too heavy for one person to lift and move on their own – so you’re going to need to ask someone to give you a hand when getting it into your property.

Here at eSafes, we provide free express kerbside delivery. This means, when you order a safe, our courier will deliver it to the entrance of your building only – we won’t bring it into the house or install it for you.
