MoneySupermarket.com has published its annual list of the Top 10 Burglary hotspots in the UK and once again the capital dominates proceedings, but towns in Greater Manchester and Yorkshire also make the Top 5.

No less than 12 London postcodes feature on the list, including Dagenham (RM8) and Gants Hill (IG2) at the top of the pile. Chorlton-cum-Hardy in Manchester is listed third and Intake, in Wheatley, South Yorkshire is fourth.

It wasn’t all bad news for these burglary hotspots, as Kevin Pratt from MoneySupermarket.com explained that a place on the list isn’t necessarily a bad place to live.

He said: "Just because somewhere is named a claim hotspot, it doesn't actually mean the area in question is not a nice place to live. "Thieves often target areas with wealthy residents and desirable properties where the rewards are potentially greater or quieter areas where they think there is less risk of being caught red-handed."
