Security Resolutions: Protecting Your Valuables in the New Year

It’s the time of year when people decide to make changes as they look to the future. This year is particularly meaningful as we look towards a new decade.

At eSafes, we have a great suggestion for a New Years Resolution that you can keep easily: upgrade your home security and the payoff throughout future years may be considerable.

Why upgrade my security?

If you keep valuables in your home, it is important that they are protected against theft. Jewellery, electronic devices and any other items of this kind should be kept away from windows and exterior doors and secured out of sight.

Failing to do this will make break ins more likely and may cause a great deal of expense and distress to members of your household.

Whether you’ve received valuable Christmas gifts or you’d just like to ensure that your home is a little safer moving forward, making changes to your security to help you keep items safe is a great way to start the New Year.

When should I make the necessary changes?

The best time to improve your security is sooner rather than later, particularly during the winter months and early spring. This time of year always sees darker, longer nights, providing greater cover of darkness to would-be intruders.

For this reason, the latest and earliest months of the year are the peak time for break-ins.

New Year’s Eve itself sees many homeowners leaving their properties to celebrate in town and city centres or with friends. This creates opportunities for thieves to break into the homes that are left empty, confident that the residents will not return until late.

What is the best approach to upgrading my security for the New Year?

Installing additional door and window locks - or upgrading to smart locks that can be controlled remotely - are great ways to manage access to your property.

However, one of the best ways to ensure that your valuables are inaccessible should all of the above hardware be bypassed is the acquisition of a home safe. These items can be highly affordable, easy to install and unobtrusive in almost any space.

What is the best type of safe for my needs?

This depends on the type of items you wish to store, as well as their volume and value.

Cash and jewellery

If you wish to store cash, you could opt for a simple and compact home safe like those from the Chubbsafes Elements Air series. They’re cash rated to £1,000 (£10,000 for non-cash valuables) and accessible via a simple key lock or electronic code lock.

For larger amounts of cash, jewellery and watches, the Securikey Euro Grade 3 safe series is superb. They’re fire-resistant for up to 30 minutes and cash rated to an impressive £35,000 (£350,000 for non-cash valuables).

They’re available in nine different sizes and can be accessed via key lock, electronic keypad or combination lock.

Paperwork and electronics

The new Phoenix Fire Commander FS1911F is tested to the Swedish NT Fire 017-120 paper standard. This means it will protect paper from fire for up to 2 hours. It’s also drop-tested to 9.1 metres.

The safe will also protect data devices from fire for up to an hour - but for something more compact and suited to the shape of a laptop, the Yale Laptop Media safe is also superb. It’s lined with soft material to prevent scratching too.
