The Crimestoppers 20 Minute Home Security Audit

Leading crime prevention organisation Crimestoppers have just released a list of home security New Year’s Resolutions for everyone to follow. As part of this they advised everyone carry out a quick 20 minute home security audit which we’d like to share with you as it’s something we all should do. What does it involve?

  • Check all your door and windows still lock properly.
  • Are any of the locks sticking or missing keys? If so they could need replaced or if your windows don’t have locks you should look at installing them as these are the most vulnerable part of your house.
  • Check the garden too – are there items lying around which should be stored away inside the house, shed or garage? If so lock them up. It’s also important there isn’t anything in the garden which can be used to break into the house e.g. ladders.
  • Crimestoppers also advise you carry out these checks on any elderly or vulnerable relatives you have.

In addition to the above steps we here at eSafes advise you also check:

  • Does your garage door lock properly and do you know where all the keys are
  • How visible are your valuables? As the nights are still dark at the minute it’s easy for thieves to peer through windows and remain unseen so make sure they’re not able to see any easy targets.
