Where is the best place to hide a safe?

So, you’ve recently invested in a safe to protect your valuables? Great – but have you thought of a good place to hide it? You want it somewhere that’s easy to access but out of reach of kids.

Safes attract burglars, like a magnet, as they assume there’s something valuable stored inside them. Experienced burglars know all the common hiding spots – be it in the drawer, cabinet or under the bed – so you must choose wisely.

Here we look at five of the best secret places to hide your safe:

  • In the attic

The attic or loft is a great hiding place for safes and other valuable possessions. Burglars won’t want to spend long in your house – climbing up into the attic – as this increases the risk of them getting caught.

Now, we’re not saying you should just plonk your safe in the middle of the attic. Try camouflaging it with old boxes or furniture – making it barely noticeable. To make it even harder for burglars to get to the attic, don’t leave the ladders nearby and secure the door with a lock.

  • In the wall

Whether you want to protect cash, jewellery, important documents or hard drives, wall safes are a brilliant option.

A wall safe can be hidden anywhere in the home – be it upstairs or downstairs – but we’d always suggest putting it somewhere that’s easy to access for those who know about its location.

  • In the floor

Arguably the most secure and discrete place to hide a safe is under the floor. Underfloor safes are an incredibly popular choice today, and with good reason.

They are difficult to remove and can be covered with a big fluffy carpet or any other furniture – making it harder for burglars to spot. The safes we supply can be installed into concrete and wood floors and they come with a combination, electronic or key lock as standard.

  • Under the stair treads

Safes come in all shapes and sizes and can house all manner of items – be it family heirlooms, delicate pieces of jewellery or the latest technology. Depending on the size of your chosen safe, and the goods you intend on storing inside it, you may consider modifying your stair treads to create a top-secret hiding place.

Although you may need to hire a professional to ensure there are no obvious traces of modification, it’s the last place a burglar will think to look.

  • Behind a hidden door or secret mirror

Ok, so it’s not the cheapest option but it’s certainly one of the most effective places to conceal a safe. The great thing is, unlike the attic, safes behind secret doors and mirrors are easily accessible for those who know about them, yet almost invisible for anyone else.

If you’re replacing a cabinet or closet with a hidden door, make sure it blends with the environment – as one that stands out will attract attention.
