Best places to hide Christmas presents at home

‘Tis the season of gift-giving.

After spending hours flicking through toy catalogues, browsing online and wandering around the shops, you’ve probably found the perfect Xmas presents for your loved ones by now.

But have you thought about where you’ll hide them to ensure they’re not discovered and opened before December 25th?

In this blog, the team at eSafes share some top tips to make sure you don’t forget where presents are stashed around your home, and to prevent your family, significant other and pets from spoiling the surprise!

Where is the best place to hide Christmas presents around the house?

Studies have shown that excited little ones tend to go present hunting when parents’ backs are turned, usually when they’re cooking dinner, watching their favourite TV shows or having a lie-in at the weekend.

Children aged 6-14 are predictable when searching for presents. Some of the places they’ll try first include under the bed, on top of the wardrobe and in the cupboard beneath the stairs.

If found, they squish them, shake them and, with all their might, try and suss out what’s inside before the big day. Some may even be tempted to take a sneak peek under the wrapping paper if you’ve already wrapped them up!

With that in mind, it’s worth finding somewhere that keeps gifts hidden from prying eyes, as well as protected against theft and damage, but easily accessible.

To help, here are just a few of our favourites…

  • In your sock drawer – need somewhere discreet to hide stocking fillers? The sock drawer is perfect for smaller items, as you can place them at the bottom or back and use fluffy festive socks to disguise them.

Alternatively, hide them in your underwear drawer. The last thing your kids will want to do is go rooting through your smalls!

  • Under the floorboards – running out of obscure hiding places around the house? Under the floorboards is a brilliant spot to keep presents out of sight, and out of mind.

Just make sure toys and gadgets are switched off before you pop them under, so they don’t give the game away when someone walks by.

  • In the bookcase – bookshelves are fantastic for secret gift storage.

In most cases, the books on the top shelves aren’t visited often as they’re harder to reach, making them ideal for concealing Xmas presents. Deep shelves may also come in handy for storing gifts behind books without drawing too much attention.

  • At the bottom of the laundry basket – is your washing basket always full? Perhaps you could hide small presents at the bottom of it and cover them with dirty washing.

Unless you’ve got your kids and other half well trained, the chances are they won’t go anywhere near the laundry basket – other than to add their dirty clothes. An alternative to the laundry basket would be in the tumble dryer (unplugged, of course!) with some laundry to make it less obvious.

  • Under the tree – if you leave your Xmas shopping to the last minute – either because you’re not one of those super organised people or you share your home with serial present hunters – you may as well wrap them up and pop them straight under the tree.

Just use plenty of tape to make sure nobody can take a sneaky peek inside! Or better yet, don’t add labels – keep them guessing until Christmas morning.

  • In the attic – the attic is typically used to store seasonal items, such as Christmas decorations, skiing equipment and suitcases.

Unless you’ve got a sturdy ladder or someone to hold it for you, nobody is going to climb up there in a hurry – making it the perfect place to stash presents out of sight (and reach) of temptation.

  • Locked inside a safe – it may seem a tad drastic, but if you’re gifting expensive gadgets or pieces of jewellery, it’s worth locking them inside a security safe. Not only will it prevent recipients from unboxing them before the 25th, but it’ll also protect them from burglary.

As security specialists, we stock an extensive range of safes, here at eSafes. These come in a variety of shapes and sizes – meaning you should have no problem finding something to suit your space and the size of the valuables you need to keep hidden from view.
