How To Store Cash Securely In The Workplace

Need to pay the window cleaner when they show up at the office unexpectedly? Forgotten your lunch and not got enough time to nip back for it?

Storing money around the workplace for emergencies is always a good idea – but you don’t want it to fall into the wrong hands by leaving it in an overly obvious spot.

Below, the team at eSafes have pulled together some tips on how to keep cash secure in the work environment.

Best place to hide small amounts of money

One of the most obvious places to hide money is in the kitchen drawer, ensuring it’s easily accessible when it’s required.

However, you need to be much more discreet than that. Consider placing it inside an envelope and taping it to the underside of the drawer or at the back of a cupboard.

You could keep petty cash in the drawer under your desk if you have one – but try and hide it in a book or something else to make it look inconspicuous. And don’t forget to lock the drawer at the end of the day.

One of the most secure places to conceal both notes and coins is in a cash box, under lock and key. Keeping this in a safe place in the office and removing the key will reduce the risk of unauthorised personnel getting their hands on it.

Best place to store large amounts of money

But what if your business handles large amounts of cash daily?

Firstly, you need to make sure that no takings are left in the till at the end of the day – that’s just asking for trouble!

The best way to keep a large sum of money safe – and out of reach of prying hands – is to then lock it up, ideally in a fireproof safe or deposit box.

The great thing about safes is that they allow you to control who has access to the contents. Without the appropriate key or PIN, the safe door won’t open, meaning the money stowed inside will be protected from theft.

A safe needs to be somewhere you can easily and safely access it, while also being out of sight of opportunists and bolted to the ground or in the wall. This will make it difficult for thieves to spot your safe and ensure they can’t then remove it.

Invest in a safe today

Safes are beneficial for all businesses and will keep money and other valuables as secure as possible.

Deposit safes (also known as drop safes and deposit boxes) are particularly popular in retail environments. They allow staff members to insert cash quickly, without opening the safe door, and an anti-fish device stops people from being able to reach in and remove the money. Only the key holder can access the cash locked away in a deposit safe.

A fireproof cash safe, on the other hand, will give you the peace of mind that your money and invoices are protected from both theft and fire damage. These have insulated walls and often include seals that prevent smoke from getting. On the outside, there will be a highly secure key, electronic or fingerprint lock to keep intruders out.

Here at eSafes, we stock a variety of fireproof and deposit safes from renowned names, including (but not limited to) Burg Wachter, Phoenix, Securikey, and Yale.
