Where should I hide my safe?

Buying a robust, high-security home safe is only half the battle.

Choosing the right hiding spot for that safe is just as crucial – if not more so.

Tucked inside the wardrobe. Under the bed. At the back of the garage. Unfortunately, burglars know all those ‘secret’ places. They’re banking on you using one of them. And leaving your safe somewhere so obvious can significantly increase the odds of it being found.

You need to defy their expectations. Prolong the theft process.

Hiding your safe in an inconspicuous and inaccessible spot will slow the criminal down, buying you more time to catch them in the act – or encouraging them to give up.

The more time it takes to find your safe, the better. And as leading security specialists, here we’ve listed the top three hiding spots that we usually recommend – to thwart would-be burglars and, essentially, keep your house safe… safe.

3 of the best places to hide a safe at home

1. Under the floor

Some home safes are specifically designed to be installed beneath the floor.

Fitted snugly underneath the floorboards and subsequently covered with a rug, carpet or furniture, these are a particularly discreet choice. The safe itself is fully concealed and out of sight. And if a burglar does manage to break into your property, it will be incredibly difficult for them to find.

Floor safes are also notoriously difficult to remove.

Made from tough steel with a high-security lock as standard, they’re almost impossible to force open. And as they’re fixed between the floor joists, they’re extremely difficult to remove. It’s highly unlikely a burglar would have the right tools (or enough time) to detach it and escape.

2. In the wall

Wall safes are another savvy option.

Unlike a wall-mounted safe – which can be possible to pry free with the right tools – a hidden wall safe is built into the structure of the wall itself. As a result, it’s especially tricky to budge, and a burglar would have to come prepared with specialist equipment to successfully open it.

This type of home safe is also relatively easy to hide, without hindering your access as the owner.

Simply place it behind a mirror or picture frame, or even a piece of furniture. When you need to open the safe, simply move this ‘concealment’ and remember to pop it back once you’re done.

3. In the loft

One of the best places to hide a safe is in the loft. Or if you don’t have one, in the basement.

Burglars want to spend as little time as possible inside your property. And as the loft can be difficult (and time-consuming) to access, this can put them off searching the space and potentially wasting time. After all, the longer they’re there, the greater the risk of them being caught or interrupted.

Of course, if you wish to open your home safe regularly, this may not be the most practical hiding spot. Not only is it difficult for would-be thieves to reach, it’s difficult for you to reach too.

But if accessibility isn’t an issue, it is a highly secure option.

To add to the effect, you can also make the loft even harder to reach – perhaps by keeping the door locked at all times and storing the ladders elsewhere. And remember to camouflage the safe itself using old cardboard boxes and other items that you’d expect to see inside a typical loft.
